We all have times where we just want to be alone.

Especially with kids, it can be hard to find time to focus on yourself and nurture your own unique needs.

But finding that precious quiet time can be a challenge.

Nevertheless, it’s important that you find a way to create a “fortress of solitude” for yourself—even if it’s just a few minutes per day.

And once you find that quiet time, here are some ways to make the most of it:


Most of us are too busy to notice that we are not breathing properly.

But just two or three minutes of deep, conscious breathing can make a huge difference in your mood and mindset.

Try this breathing exercise for an instant refresher:

Sit comfortably, with your back straight but not stiff, or lay down if that’s more comfortable for you.

Inhale slowly through your nose. Let the air fill your stomach and abdomen.Continue inhaling and let the air rise up into your chest area, filling that too.

The idea is to inhale as deeply as possible, filling your body with new, cleansing oxygen.

Hold the breath for a moment. Focusing your breath on the stomach area will help alleviate stress, fear, and other negative emotions holding you back.

Now, exhale slowly, feeling your chest go down and the air slowly flowing from your mouth.

Keep exhaling until you push out that last bit of air—emptying your body completely of negative energy.

Pause a moment and let the next breath come naturally—don’t force it.

Concentrate and deeply inhale and exhale, releasing toxins and negativity and making space for new, positive energy.

Close your eyes and forget your surroundings. Focus only on your breath, and let all other sounds come and go without disturbing you.

Instead of focusing on your environment, focus inward, on yourself.

Feel the flow of oxygen throughout your body, your heart beating in a steady rhythm, and the slow movements of your stomach and chest.

This is your time to heal.

Picture healing energy traveling throughout your body, giving you the strength to continue on with your day and overcome any challenge.

If it helps, picture in your mind a calm, peaceful place. Transport yourself there in your mind.

The beach, a lake in the mountains, an open field, or a deep forest are all great, calming places to “travel.”

Choose your favorite and make it as detailed as possible. Look at pictures for inspiration if you wish.

This is your secret place, the place that refreshes you and gives you new energy.

Try this exercise for just a few minutes each day and notice how different you feel.

Just like on an airplane the safety instructions tell you to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others…

You need to feel happy and energized before you can give to other people in your life.

So take care of yourself…you deserve it!

      Breathing exercise is a help. I strongly agree with the last phrase.. You need to feel happy and energized before you can give to other people in your life… After all this time I always think of others, but I always felt it was never enough. I found out I haven’t given and taken care of myself enough that is why I can’t feel wholeness.

      This is so true. I experienced a time that I was so connected and it was a time that I had at least 15 minutes alone a day to meditate and self reflect on the inner self and drawing good things into my life. I have lost that and I know I need to add that back in to my day. Time alone to reflect is very vital and important.
